The Process

Step 1: Scheduling your session

In order to reserve a date, you will sign some paperwork and pay a retainer fee (see below). If we haven't already, the easiest way to compare calendars is for you to email or call me with a few dates that work for your family - I always try to be as flexible as possible, and once we find a date, booking is 100% online and takes just a few minutes. As you pull out your calendar, here are a few thing to consider:

  • Given the beautiful colors and temperate weather, spring and fall are the busiest times of year for outdoor family photos in Boulder, Colorado. If you'd like a session during one of those times, please get in touch as soon as possible!
  • If you have a particular date by which you need prints or gifts (Mother's Day, Father's Day, Senior Portraits, Christmas, Hanukkah, etc), be sure to book a date at least two months in advance of that date to ensure sufficient processing and printing time.
  • Babies and young children are almost universally at their very best first thing in the morning, which just happens to also be a great time of day for beautiful light. If you have children under five years old, I encourage you to consider a session at or as close to sunrise as you can reasonably be ready.
  • If you have older children or have one of those rare babies that doesn't do mornings, the other time of the day that has great light is late afternoon/early evening - about 1.5 hours before sunset.
  • Beautiful photographs can be made in any kind of weather, but I understand that there are some downsides to being photographed in the pouring rain or the freezing cold. I can and do reschedule sessions for inclement weather, but am also happy to use your home or another indoor location if sticking to the schedule is a priority.
  • If you are doing a photo & video session at your home, I can work at just about any daylight time. Recording your family as you are is my specialty and these sessions are often laid-back and joyful. It's always good to have a few things in mind for you and your kids to do during these sessions: bake some muffins, get out the playdough, paint rocks or play in the mud. We can also go for a hike, if that's your thing!

Step 2: The Session

Once we've decided on a time and date and officially put your session on the books, I'll send you a getting ready guide that will walk you through everything - whether you have young children at home or a senior about to graduate high school - like whether you should wear that graphic t-shirt or not, and whether it's worth bringing a backup outfit for your 2 year old (it is!) for the more formal photos, or whether documenting your child playing in the mud is a good idea or not (yes please!). That guide has been created and refined over years of experience, so it typically answers 90% of the questions that come up, but I'm always happy to set up a time to chat if you want additional help. My goal is to make this as stress-free, and dare I say, fun? as possible.

A few days before your session, I'll reach out to confirm the time and location, and at that point, if the forecast is questionable or someone seems to be coming down with the flu, we can talk about rescheduling options. If you are doing an in-home session, we can finalize any fun things we plan on capturing (re: playing in the mud, as above). Otherwise, that's the perfect time to ask any last-minute questions or let me know if you've come up with an idea we haven't discussed already.

Step 3: The Collections

Within just a couple of weeks of your session, you'll receive an email from me with a link to a slideshow that includes all of your fully-edited images. Once opened, you'll have 24 hours to view and enjoy and then decide on which Collection you would like to purchase. Once you have purchased your Collection, you'll have a full month to select the specific digital files to download and order your prints from my online store. I have found that this offers my clients the beauty of only purchasing what they love and still having the time to choose heirloom-quality prints in my store without any pressure. This is the fun part!

I promise that I'll deliver 40 prints for your slideshow, but I always deliver far more than that (60 - 80+ images). You'll have a great selection from which to choose your absolute favorites.

Step 4. Shop My Online Store

What you're going to do with your images is perhaps the most important aspect to consider when you're planning for a photo session, but it's all too often the aspect that's overlooked...all that time and money invested deserve a better return than photos gathering dust on a hard drive somewhere. You'll never get the same feeling looking at your photos on a screen as you will seeing them on your wall or flipping through the pages of an album, so I include a substantial print credit with every collection.
